Step into a world of creativity with our engaging glassmaking workshop nestled in Buckinghamshire. You’ll have the chance to experiment with materials and techniques in two immersive sessions,half-day and full-day courses designed to ignite your passion for glass art. Under the expert guidance of skilled glassmakers, including the talented Derek Bransfield, you’ll gain valuable insights into the glassmaking process.
During your time at our spacious studio in Aylesbury, you’ll learn about the history and art of glassmaking, employing traditional techniques that have stood the test of time since Roman days. Discover the fascinating chemistry behind glass as you work with essential ingredients such as sand, soda ash, and lime, and watch how different additives can create a spectrum of colors. Did you know that just a hint of iron oxide yields the iconic green of beer bottles?
Each workshop accommodates a maximum of eight participants, ensuring a personalized experience filled with individual attention. After an informative welcome and safety briefing, you’ll be guided through the practical aspects of handling hot glass. From familiarizing yourself with the tools to mastering the art of manipulating molten glass at a searing 1100 degrees Celsius, excitement is guaranteed!
The highlight of your session? Gathering glass from the glowing crucible! Witness the magic as you transform a colorless blob into a unique creation. With an array of crushed colored glass at your disposal, you’ll have the opportunity to introduce your personal flair, crafting bubbles, swirls, and stunning shapes for your bespoke paperweight. For those opting for the full-day experience, the adventure continues with a glassblowing workshop in the afternoon, allowing you to create your very own blown glass piece, usually a charming vase.
